Communication
UIS PROGRAMMABLE SERVICES, INC. can design, install, and maintain a variety of communication systems. A Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system can employ a wide range of wired (lease line, dialup line, cable, fiber, etc.) and/or wireless (radio, cellular, satellite, etc.) media for its communication infrastructure. Wireless (licensed and non-licensed) networks have become quite popular, although RS-232, RS-485, Ethernet, and TCP/IP are also common. Any of these media can be combined in one system. The remote management of a SCADA system is often referred to as telemetry. Typical protocols used are Profibus, DNP3, and Modbus.

The Store and Forward (S & F) site or Repeater refers to a site that acts as in intermediate point of communication in a SCADA system. Particularly in telemetry systems, these sites allow communication between remote (RTU) sites and the master (MTU) site when a direct path is not possible.

SCADA - Example of Store & Forward

RF (radio frequency) based technologies have become increasingly popular in SCADA applications. The reliability, performance, and costs of radio networks have contributed to this. Radio communication works well for control and acquisition of data from remote locations and provides flexibility in installation. Also, the SCADA system owner is in control of the communications infrastructure.

To ensure a reliable system, UIS PROGRAMMABLE SERVICES, INC. recommends that our customers perform maintenance every two years on their SCADA systems. At each SCADA site, we test radios for correct frequency and power settings, back-up batteries and charging circuits, and communication with the master site. We also test the antenna, cables, and surge protector at each site for integrity. Servicing your SCADA system regularly insures peak performance operation and minimizes downtime.
