The Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) connects to physical equipment at the remote sites of a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system. The RTU can be programmed to monitor and/or control data. The RTU can read and send out commands in either digital or analog signals. For example, the open/close status of a switch or valve, the measurement of flow, pressure, voltage or current can be read by the RTU and processed to control equipment such as opening or closing a switch or valve or setting the speed of a pump. Alarms can also be implemented based on certain values. The SCADA system would notify the human operator by displaying the alarms and/or generating a message to alert attention by e-mail, text message, etc.
The Master Station refers to the site with the servers and software responsible for communicating with the remote field units. This site also has the Human Machine Interface (HMI) software and equipment. Some systems can be configured with redundant master sites.
